San Jose ranked as the tenth happiest city in America in WalletHub’s 2026 Happiest Cities in America study.
This marks the fifth consecutive year that San Jose has appeared among the top 10 cities in WalletHub’s annual ranking.
The study evaluates conditions associated with happiness across 182 United States cities. These conditions include emotional and physical well being, employment, income, community and environmental factors.
The ranking is a third party assessment of general city conditions. It is not a measure of property values, real estate performance or investment results.
Is San Jose One of the Happiest Cities in America?
According to WalletHub, yes.
San Jose ranked No. 10 nationally in 2026. Its rankings over the previous five studies were:
2022: No. 4
2023: No. 2
2024: No. 3
2025: No. 2
2026: No. 10
San Jose was fourth in 2022, second in 2023, third in 2024, second in 2025 and tenth in 2026.
Rankings can change when underlying data, weighting or methodology changes. San Jose’s placement should therefore be understood as the result of WalletHub’s specific analysis, not as an objective or universal measure of resident happiness.
How Does WalletHub Measure Happiness?
WalletHub compared 182 cities across three categories:
- Emotional and physical well being
- Income and employment
- Community and environment
The 2026 study used 29 weighted measures. These included life satisfaction, physical health, mental health, life expectancy, employment conditions, work hours, commute time, recreation and selected community factors.
Each city received a weighted score based on the methodology established by WalletHub.
The study included the 150 most populated cities in the United States, along with at least two of the most populated cities in each state.
How Did San Jose Perform in 2026?
San Jose received an overall score of 67.79.
Its category results were:
Emotional and physical well being: No. 7
Income and employment: No. 45
Community and environment: No. 42
Overall ranking: No. 10
San Jose’s strongest category was emotional and physical well being. The city also had the fifth lowest separation and divorce rate among the cities evaluated.
These results describe San Jose’s position within WalletHub’s methodology. They do not establish that every resident has the same experience or level of satisfaction.
Why Has San Jose Ranked Highly?
Previous WalletHub studies have associated San Jose’s rankings with several factors.
Emotional and Physical Well Being
San Jose has performed well in measures related to emotional and physical well being. Earlier WalletHub studies also identified the city’s long average life expectancy as a factor in its ranking.
Employment Conditions
San Jose is located within Silicon Valley, a major center for technology and business. WalletHub includes employment and income data as part of its analysis, although San Jose ranked No. 45 in this category for 2026.
Community Conditions
WalletHub considers selected community and environmental measures, including recreation, commute time, weather and community well being. San Jose ranked No. 42 in this category for 2026.
Regional Access
San Jose residents have access to employment centers, cultural destinations and outdoor recreation throughout Silicon Valley and the greater Bay Area. These characteristics are part of the broader local context, although they should not be interpreted as guarantees of individual satisfaction.
What Does the Ranking Say About San Jose?
The ranking provides one data based perspective on conditions in San Jose.
It suggests that San Jose compares favorably with many other large cities under WalletHub’s selected measures. The city’s five consecutive appearances in the top 10 also show consistent results within this particular annual study.
However, the ranking does not address every factor that may influence someone’s experience of living in San Jose.
Housing affordability, transportation, public safety, access to services and neighborhood conditions can affect residents differently. Personal experiences may vary considerably based on individual circumstances.
The Role of City Planning
Quality of life is influenced by many public and private decisions.
Housing, transportation, public spaces, retail, dining and neighborhood services all shape how residents experience a city. Planning decisions can also affect access to workplaces, amenities and community resources.
Downtown San Jose is one part of this larger civic environment. Housing, transit, cultural institutions, restaurants, entertainment and public gathering spaces all contribute to how people use and experience downtown.
The future effect of any development or planning decision cannot be predicted with certainty. New development may also involve economic, regulatory, construction, financing, leasing and market risks.
Understanding the Limitations
The WalletHub ranking is not a direct survey of every San Jose resident. It is a weighted comparison assembled from multiple data sources.
The results depend on the measures selected, the weight assigned to each measure and the information available when the study was prepared.
Other studies may use different definitions of happiness and may produce different results.
The ranking should not be interpreted as:
- A prediction of future population or economic growth
- Evidence that property values will increase
- A projection of rental demand or occupancy
- An endorsement of any company, development or securities offering
- A representation of past or future investment performance
- A guarantee of any financial or community outcome
Five Consecutive Years in the Top 10
San Jose has remained among WalletHub’s 10 happiest cities from 2022 through 2026.
Its ranking moved from No. 2 in 2025 to No. 10 in 2026. Changes from year to year may reflect updated data, changes elsewhere in the ranking or revisions to the study’s methodology.
The longer record shows that San Jose has consistently performed well under WalletHub’s framework. It does not establish how the city will rank in future studies.

Real Estate Risk Disclosure:
- There is no guarantee that any strategy will be successful or achieve investment objectives including, among other things, profits, distributions, tax benefits, exit strategy, etc.;
- Potential for property value loss – All real estate investments have the potential to lose value during the life of the investments;
- Change of tax status – The income stream and depreciation schedule for any investment property may affect the property owner’s income bracket and/or tax status. An unfavorable tax ruling may cancel deferral of capital gains and result in immediate tax liabilities;
- Potential for foreclosure – All financed real estate investments have potential for foreclosure;
- Illiquidity – These assets are commonly offered through private placement offerings and are illiquid securities. There is no secondary market for these investments.
- Reduction or Elimination of Monthly Cash Flow Distributions – Like any investment in real estate, if a property unexpectedly loses tenants or sustains substantial damage, there is potential for suspension of cash flow distributions;
- Impact of fees/expenses – Costs associated with the transaction may impact investors’ returns and may outweigh the tax benefits
- Stated tax benefits – Any stated tax benefits are not guaranteed and are subject to changes in the tax code. Speak to your tax professional prior to investing.
Opportunity Zone Disclosures
- Investing in opportunity zones is speculative. Opportunity zones are newly formed entities with no operating history. There is no assurance of investment return, property appreciation, or profits. The ability to resell the fund’s underlying investment properties or businesses is not guaranteed. Investing in opportunity zone funds may involve a higher level of risk than investing in other established real estate offerings.
- Long-term investment. Opportunity zone funds have illiquid underlying investments that may not be easy to sell and the return of capital and realization of gains, if any, from an investment will generally occur only upon the partial or complete disposition or refinancing of such investments.
- Limited secondary market for redemption. Although secondary markets may provide a liquidity option in limited circumstances, the amount you will receive typically is discounted to current valuations.
- Difficult valuation assessment. The portfolio holdings in opportunity zone funds may be difficult to value because financial markets or exchanges do not usually quote or trade the holdings. As such, market prices for most of a fund’s holdings will not be readily available.
- Capital call default consequences. Meeting capital calls to provide managers with the pledged capital is a contractual obligation of each investor. Failure to meet this requirement in a timely manner could elicit significant adverse consequences, including, without limitation, the forfeiture of your interest in the fund.
- Opportunity zone funds may use leverage in connection with certain investments or participate in investments with highly leveraged capital structures. Leverage involves a high degree of financial risk and may increase the exposure of such investments to factors such as rising interest rates, downturns in the economy or deterioration in the condition of the assets underlying such investments.
- Unregistered investment. As with other unregistered investments, the regulatory protections of the Investment Company Act of 1940 are not available with unregistered securities.
- It is possible, due to tax, regulatory, or investment decisions, that a fund, or its investors, are unable realize any tax benefits. You should evaluate the merits of the underlying investment and not solely invest in an opportunity zone fund for any potential tax advantage.
